I noticed that you have tried many methods (Online mode, create new profile etc.) in your scenario. It is so strange that old contact items are returned in your contact search results since the old items have been deleted from the folder. And whatever I put in the problem public folder vanishes overnight. Interestingly typing the email into the “to” field and right clicking to see properties leads to the correct contact, but search from the contacts list systematically goes wrong. However the search is still returning outdated contact information on the problem system. This new public folder appears to all users and does not get emptied overnight. OK : I give up on that public folder, make a new one with a different name and import the contacts latest version. Search on the problem system shows the old versions restored by mistake. Next morning – no items in this one problem public folder. So – put Outlook in non-cached mode, also put public folders in non-cached mode, delete all the OST and other cache files I can find, delete the mail profile, restart the system, create a new mail profile, re-check “show as Outlook Address Book”, delete If I look through the contacts, they are the correct version but the search after finishing its re-indexing is still showing the old contacts I restored by mistake. Other users are happy, on my problem system I delete and rebuild the index again. So I restore from the dumpster, and the most version of the contacts appear in the public folder. In “restore deleted items” I find a version of these contacts, restore them, re-index, only to find I have restored an old version. Next morning all the contacts are gone from the public folder, though the folder is still there. I delete the search index (Control Panel) and tell it to rebuild. I add the folder to favorites, so it gets cached and indexed (I think this is not necessary).
I check the “show as an Outlook address book” box. Upon investigation I find a strange favourite shortcut to a particular public folder containing contacts and remove that.

Search does work for the same user on their old Windows 7/Office 2010 system. One user complains that search does not work properly – does not find contacts in public folders.

I am replacing some Windows 7 /Office 2010 PCs with new systems with Windows 10 Pro and Office 2016. Working in a small single domain network with Windows 2012R2 DCs and Exchange 2013.
